Lake Vermilion Fishing Report

Despite the cold water temperatures, the walleye bite over the past week has been very good. There are days where the weather changes have shut the bite down, but those slow periods are lasting less than a day.

Fishing slow in 24 to 36 feet of water is key. If you are moving more than 0.5 miles per hour you will be missing a lot of the non-aggressive fish. Minnows on Lindy Rigs and jigs are working best, but leeches are also putting a few fish in the boat. While fishing deep you will be sorting through a lot of small walleyes to get your keepers so if you want more of the bigger fish, but slower action, key in on the 12 to 16-foot gravel shorelines adjacent to the mud flats.

Crappie fishing has been getting better every day. Look for the newly emerging weeds and you will find the crappies. Small plastics in 3 to 7 feet of water is working best. Water temperatures in these shallow bays is already reaching the mid-60s during the day.
