Lake Vermilion Fishing Report

The trolling bite for walleyes has begun on the main lake basins and continues to get better each day.  Trolling crank baits on lead core or down riggers in 25 to 30 feet of water seems to be working best.  A lot of these fish are just off the deep edges and are easily spotted on your sonar as they are a few feet off bottom when they are actively feeding.  The reefs continue to hold a lot of eater walleyes although some of the reefs are getting over run with walleyes on the smaller side.  The walleyes are still filled with baby perch so matching your lure selection around perch patterns can make a big difference.

Bass fishing for largemouth and smallouth has been pretty consistent.  The deeper fish seem to be biting all day while the shallow bass are biting good in low light periods. Soft plastics of almost any shape and size have been working well.  Some of the biggest walleyes are being caught while fishing for bass lately too so that is always an added bonus.
