Lake Vermilion Fishing Report
The walleye fishing remains to be strong trolling the mud flats. Finding large schools of fish on your electronics and trolling through them is producing plenty of fish. If you are not marking a lot of fish, don’t waste your time as you need to find the big schools which tend to have at least a few hungry fish that are willing to bite. Walleyes are also being found mixed in with the smallmouth bass on deeper structure. Minnows are starting to produce about as equally as worms now that the water temps are staying below 70 degrees. Mid day fishing can be a little slow but mornings and evenings are having some nice bite windows.
The AIM weekend walleye tournament that took place last week on Lake Vermilion helps prove that the lake has a very strong big fish population as well as lots of eaters. The winners had 64.8 pounds for 10 fish in the two day tournament, very impressive!
A lot of muskies are being caught even with this unstable weather, not many over 50 inches have been reported, but lots in that mid 40 inch range. Surface baits and soft plastics are working well.
