Lake Vermilion Northern Pike Regulations – 2019

The DNR is considering two options for the northern pike regulations on Lake Vermilion in 2019.

The first option would be continue with the current special regulation:  3 northern pike with a slot limit of 24-36 inches where all fish would have to be released. Only one of the three fish kept can exceed 36 inches. This is a special regulation that has been in place and is special to Lake Vermilion. This special regulation applies to all anglers and spearers.

The second option being considered is a regulation that is now the state regulation for most lakes in the northeast region of the state although there maybe some other other lakes with special regulations. This new northeast regulation is 2 northern pike with a slot limit of 30 to 40 inches. Only one of the two fish can exceed 40 inches. For spearers, only one fish over 26 inches is allowed in a two fish limit.

The DNR held a meeting in Tower in August to present the options and only three people attended. The DNR would like your input, and this is your chance to provide your feedback on these options and which one you prefer.

Please send your preferences to the DNR Fisheries Area Supervisor Edie Evarts at the following email address:  edie.evarts@state.mn.us  or call at 218-300-7803.  All comments must be received by September 26, 2018 to be considered in the decision on which option to implement in 2019.
