Shoreline Restoration Results at Lake Vermilion

In June 2015, the Vermilion Lake Association (VLA) hosted a Shoreline Restoration Workshop at Greenwood Town Hall. VLA board member Wayne Suoja detailed the importance of shoreline buffer zones of native plants to reduce runoff, thus improving water quality and providing habitat for wildlife.

After the workshop, several members traveled to a demonstration planting on the Birch Point Road property owned by Irene Sieckert and Dan Karolevitz. The “before” and “after” photos tell the story.

This year another project was started on Rodney Aho’s property and his neighbor’s property, also on the Birch Point Road. This project is aimed at preventing erosion on a steep shoreline. Rod ordered trees from the North St. Louis Soil and Water Conservation District and planted red dogwood cuttings provided by Wayne Suoja.
